About Association of Western Art History

The Association of Western Art History, founded in 1989, has grown into a leading academic society in the field of art history in Korea, with over 400 members including scholars specializing in ancient and medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, early modern, and contemporary Western art history, as well as related art fields. Over the past 35 years, the Association has played a central role as a platform for scholarly discourse on diverse topics spanning from the art of antiquity to the present day, as well as Western art in Asia, through regular academic conferences, symposiums, and journal publications.

Today's art and culture are undergoing rapid transformation due to globalization, with increasing demand for cultural understanding across society. The societal need for research in Western art history extends beyond academia in various ways. In response, the Association of Western Art History seeks to establish a vision for the society in the global era. Our 17th executive committee will strive to respect the scholarly traditions and achievements accumulated by the Association over the years, while actively fostering vibrant scholarly discussions both domestically and internationally over the next two years. We endeavor to expand the Association's outreach through exchanges with overseas institutions, interdisciplinary research with neighboring fields, solidarity with related societies, and attracting young researchers.
